Because of the small size of N Gauge
model railways, I found a wallpaper pasting table to be a very cheap
baseboard and stand. OK, it's not the most stable object but at
around £10 in your local DIY store, it's great, if like me, you
don't have too much money to spend constructing a miniature model
railway. I also bought a couple of timber battens to screw under the
long edges from end to end to give it more rigidity. I also purchased
some extra 6 inch thin cladding and made a border edge around the
whole table, although I later removed the front edge to allow better
access to the railway.
You can see from the pictures above how
the baseboard worked out for me. You can also see that I constructed
a series of tunnels at the right hand end using timber left over from
the cladding.
